About five years ago Kari Stefansson published an interesting paper, A common inversion under selection in Europeans. The basic thrust of the results was that a particular genomic region in Europeans exhibited a pattern of variation whereby there was one variant which was inverted in relation to the modal type...

Mutation of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor protein at codon 200 (R200W) is associated with a disease known as Chuvash polycythemia. In addition to polycythemia, Chuvash patients have pulmonary hypertension and increased respiratory rates, although the pathophysiological basis of these symptoms is unclear. Here we sought to address this issue by studying mice homozygous for the R200W Vhl mutation (VhlR/R mice) as a model for Chuvash disease.

Kristin’s interest in human genetics was piqued when she learned the utility of Punnett squares in her high school biology class. In pursuit of a career in human genetics, she earned bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and zoology at the University of Oklahoma. Her graduate studies at the University of Kansas included a master’s thesis examining the efficacy of RAPD markers in determining genetic structure and population history of the Chuvash of Western Siberia.
Chuvash-type congenital polycythemia in 4 families of Asian and Western European ancestry
Chuvash polycythemia is believed to be caused by direct production of erythropoietin by VHL-associated hemangioblastoma. A cluster of patients with Chuvash polycythemia have been found in other populations, such as on the Italian island of Ischia, located in the Bay of Naples.
Reconstructing the phylogeny of African mitochondrial DNA lineages in Slavs. Genetic studies have shown that African-specific lineages are very rare in eastern European populations. They have not been found in a large sample of indigenous eastern Europeans, including Mordva, Mari, Udmurt, Tatar, Chuvash, Komi, Bashkir, Karels, Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians.

Thesis: Genetic diversity among the Chuvash using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers
A compact grouping that deserves special attention here includes the ethnic groups with the highest values of MI and PI (most Mari, part of Udmurts, northern and Kola Sami, also one group of Chuvash and Tatars).

Genetic analysis of autosomal recessive osteopetrosis in Chuvashiya: the unique splice site mutation in TCIRG1gene spread by the founder effect
The presence of such a genetic differentiation in the Chuvash population presumably results from the long reproductive isolation of the population and the genetic drift. The mutation most likely was fixed in the tribe of Bulgars-Suvars, which populated the North of current Chuvashiya during the period from thirteenth to fourteenth centuries or in old Marians (also known as Cheremis) who before this period occupied the territory.

All graphs must be take with a grain of salt, as the Tuvinian graphs demonstrate, but within reason they help in understanding demographical history. So, the Bashkirs, Chuvashes, Tatars and Turks have a substantial admixture with Finno-Ugric women,
